Shared Moments of Nothingness

Writer's picture: Julian SzablowskiJulian Szablowski

Do you know that feeling when you’re idle at home, not doing anything, but feeling this antsy craving to be doing something else somewhere else doing anything else other than what you're doing right now?

One of my friends was going through a gauntlet of sorts and their energy was off. It was full of doubt and negative self-talk, and they were confused as to why they were still feeling so down, even though they admitted to themselves that the external things that were happening weren’t inherently bad.

After talking through it over the phone, we decided to make plans to get together.

There was no particular plan in mind - the goal was to simply share space, enjoy each other's company, and have a good conversation about whatever came naturally.

Not having any “plan” for our plan would be key.

A couple of days later, we met up at the beach to watch the sunset. It was absolutely stunning. The sun was a deep red-orange, the clouds appeared like big balls of cotton candy. The visibility was almost perfectly clear, so we could see every shadow and crevice on Catalina Island. There was no pressure to go out, no pressure to invite other people, no pressure to search for something to do.

45 minutes passed by without exchanging more than a few words.

This “shared nothingness” is a result of deep friendship - when two humans can simply coexist in a shared space, are free to be their authentic selves, speak freely without fear of judgment, and sit in silence, yet stay connected. By the time the sun had completely set, my friend's energy had completely shifted.

We enjoyed the rest of the night engaged in fun conversation, laughter from our bellies , and a deep appreciation for ourselves and for each other.

Sometimes, doing nothing with someone is all that we really need to do.
